Harmful drinking
harms your business
The extent of alcohol missuse is often hidden, but the costs are very real.
Traditional models of support don't work, because employees face stigma, fear of reprisal or simply don't identify with being a problematic drinker.
Curb Health encourages employees to celebrate healthy behaviour change without labels whilst feeling safe in the privacy of their own phone.
Calculate the cost of alcohol on your business.
Using data from the Office of National Statistics and the Institute of Alcohol Studies, we can give an indication of the impact of alcohol on your business.
Simply tell us your employee count, average daily labour cost per employee (including benefits) and the type of employees in your business.
How do we do our calculations?
10 million people regularly exceed alcohol guidelines.
In England, an estimated:
- 10 million people regularly exceed the Chief Medical Officer’s low-risk drinking guidelines.
- 1.7 million drinkers are higher risk.
- 600,000 are alcohol dependent.
(House of Commons Report, 2023)
The Institute of Alcohol Studies collected data which showed that the average employee spent 0.7 days per annum hungover or intoxicated whilst at work, some studies have shown this figure to be much higher. On average, these employees rated their performance to be 39% less effective (2) (3).
The Office for National Statistics surveyed the drinking habits of employees and showed that the percentage of employees who consumed alcohol in the previous week was 70% for professional and managerial employees, 60% for intermediate employees and 51% for routine and manual employees. (1)
A pilot study of Curb’s mobile app, published by Cambridge University Press in The BJPsych OPEN showed that over 90% of drinkers managed to reduce or quit drinking altogether over a 4 week period. (4) With this in mind, we anticipate delivering up to a 400% ROI for employers, meaning that for every £1 spent on Curb, £5 would be saved from lost productivity.

Harmful drinking harms your business.
“Heavier drinkers tend to report lower productivity, lower quality work and are more likely to get into arguments or accidents.”
(The Institute of Alcohol Studies, 2020).
Professionals and managers are more likely to drink excessively.
Many people assume that professionals and managers would drink less frequently and with less excess. There’s a range of biases that lead to this conclusion. In truth, if your business provides professional or managerial services, you’re more likely to be impacted.
